Population decline continues in Oyndarfjørður as development stagnates

The population of Oyndarfjørður reached its peak in 1945, with 227 residents. Since then, the number has steadily declined, and today only 121 people live in the village.

The merger with Runavíkar Municipality has brought many benefits to Oyndarfjørður, but there is a significant issue: no new residential developments have taken place in the village for the past 20 years.

Ólavur Klein Olsen, who moved back to Oyndarfjørður in 2017 after living abroad for 14 years, highlights this concern.

Torbjørn Jacobsen, the mayor of Runavíkar Municipality, acknowledges that new developments have occurred in several villages within the municipality in recent years, but not in all. He confirms that efforts are currently being made to secure building land in Oyndarfjørður.

For more insights into the opinions of residents of Runavíkar Municipality regarding the development in their community, more information is available on the Kringvarp website.
