Storm prompts orange weather warning in Westfjords, Iceland

Thursday 5th 2024 on 19:08 in
Iceland

A strong southwest storm has prompted an orange weather warning for the Westfjords region of Iceland. Today, two boats broke free from their moorings at Pollurinn in Ísafjörður and were carried ashore by the rough seas. One of the vessels became stuck on the shore this afternoon while waiting for the winds to calm, allowing for recovery efforts. Earlier in the day, a sailing boat was reported to have been swept onto a rocky breakwater near Pollgötu.

The severe weather conditions have resulted in high waves and strong winds across the Westfjords, causing property damage such as flying roof panels. Rescue teams have responded to several emergencies related to the storm.

Authorities are advising caution as the storm impacts the area, leading to hazardous conditions on land and at sea.
