Police in Reykjanesbær have informed parents that they will intervene if their children exhibit inappropriate behavior during the Ljósanótt festival this weekend. Officers from the South Peninsula and the capital region, along with armed special forces, will provide visible security at the event.

The Ljósanótt festival, which begins today and runs through the weekend, has prompted enhanced security measures. Bjarney Annelsdóttir, the chief of police in the South Peninsula, emphasized the importance of safety following several incidents related to knife violence at recent events. Increased police visibility will include patrols and additional support from the capital region’s police.

Recent serious incidents in the community have raised concerns, leading to broader safety precautions, including the installation of metal detectors at high school events and heightened readiness for the upcoming Oktoberfest at the University of Iceland.

Bjarney expressed general anxiety within the community but conveyed hope that the Ljósanótt festival would proceed without issues. She highlighted the police’s commitment to positive communication, noting that officers have recently discussed the importance of good conduct with children and teenagers in local schools.

If any unusual behavior occurs, Bjarney stated that police officers would address the situation and reminded parents that they have been informed about the increased oversight. “Ljósanótt is a family festival,” she reiterated, urging participants to enjoy the festivities responsibly.

The festival aims to foster community spirit while ensuring a safe environment for all attendees.
