A recent investigation into anonymous social media accounts linked to the Sweden Democrats (SD) has stirred significant debate. The investigation revealed that 23 anonymous accounts are connected to the party’s communications department. In response, the Liberals are urging the government to consider banning anonymous accounts, a stance that has now gained support from the Social Democrats.

Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand acknowledged the calls for action, stating, “It is evident that something needs to be done.” She did not rule out the possibility of legislation, an inquiry, or even bipartisan agreements to find alternative solutions. Liljestrand emphasized the importance of addressing what she views as a democratic issue, condemning the use of anonymous accounts as a threat to democracy. She stated, “Neither I nor my party support anonymous accounts. They undermine democracy through misleading methods that deceive the public.”

The minister insists that political parties have a duty to maintain transparency with voters, asserting, “As political parties, we are responsible for being clear about the source of information. Voters have the right to know who is behind the messages.”

When asked whether political influence through anonymous accounts will persist in the next election campaign, Liljestrand expressed uncertainty but hopes all political parties can reach a consensus on adopting a transparent approach in Swedish democracy.
