Five million Icelandic krónur incorrectly disbursed to foreigners under fishing industry scheme in Faroe Islands

In the past year, around five million Icelandic krónur were incorrectly disbursed in support to foreigners under the fishing industry scheme. This is confirmed by a new legal report requested by the ALS board.

For some foreigners, this unemployment benefit forms the basis of their stay in the Faroe Islands. Between 10 to 15 foreigners have received support from the fishing industry scheme for up to one and a half years, despite having worked little or not at all during their time in the Faroe Islands.

Eyðfinnur Jacobsen, chairman of ALS, stated this information during a radio appearance this morning. The issue arises because it has been previously assessed that foreigners coming to the Faroe Islands for work meet the requirements of a 40-hour workweek if they are part of the fishing industry scheme.

This situation raises questions about the oversight and management of the support systems in place aimed at foreign workers. For those interested in further details, a segment on this topic is available in the radio news broadcast.
