Adenovirus outbreak at Kainuu Brigade shows signs of easing in Kajaani

The adenovirus outbreak at the Kainuu Brigade appears to be slightly calming, based on the number of conscripts seeking treatment for respiratory symptoms at the health center in Kajaani this week. Today, 110 conscripts visited the center, while 140 visited yesterday. This marks a significant decrease compared to peak numbers in the previous two weeks, according to Brigade Chief Lt. Colonel Jukka Vuorisalmi.

“Though it’s tempting to draw conclusions from just a couple of days, I wouldn’t do that,” Vuorisalmi stated. Currently, five conscripts are hospitalized, with two in intensive care. There are isolated cases of illness among the brigade staff.

A more comprehensive overview of the situation will be available on Friday, when officials will also consider whether to continue or ease the current restrictions at the garrison. “Every measure will be assessed individually. We must proceed cautiously, as premature actions could have repercussions,” Vuorisalmi added.

The number of adenovirus infections and related symptoms among conscripts surged rapidly this autumn. To contain the spread, the brigade has increased hygiene practices, mandated face masks in indoor settings, and implemented meals by unit. Additionally, conscripts have been restricted from evening leave to prevent further transmission.

Vuorisalmi indicated that the brigade is continuously evaluating how to better prepare for similar situations in the future. Although comprehensive conclusions have yet to be reached, discussions include improving forecasting to ensure timely implementation of necessary measures. “The adenovirus outbreak last spring was on a smaller scale. We were able to pinpoint its origin. This time, it started spreading from multiple sources simultaneously, affecting everyone,” he concluded.
