Employers’ Association advocates for municipal disposal systems in Faroe Islands construction waste regulation debate

Faroe Islands

A new regulation does not designate who is responsible for construction waste, which is often good enough to recycle.

The Employers’ Association and the Craft Masters Association state that it would be too burdensome for individual companies to collect, store, and reuse construction materials.

They recommend implementing municipal or private disposal systems for construction materials intended for reuse.

Both associations have submitted a consultation document regarding the proposed regulation on waste disposal.

The industry accounts for the majority of waste in the Faroe Islands, with estimates between 50 and 60 percent.

The Employers’ Association and the Craft Masters Association believe that industry representatives should be included in the group responsible for developing the national waste strategy.

The Environmental Agency and municipalities are currently part of this working group.

The national waste strategy is expected to be publicly announced on January 1, 2025.

Additionally, the Employers’ Association and the Craft Masters Association advocate for the household waste collection system to also include waste from businesses and institutions, where the composition is comparable to that of household waste.
