A wolf that was struck by a vehicle has died in Sonkajärvi, Finland. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday on Highway 5, near Sonkajärvi. Police received a report of the collision at 1:40 AM, and by the time they arrived at the scene, the wolf was already deceased. Fortunately, there were no injuries to the driver, though the front of the car sustained minor damage.

According to the Eastern Finland police, the wolf unexpectedly ran onto the road in front of the vehicle, leaving the driver with no time to react to avoid the impact. The speed limit in the area is 100 kilometers per hour.

The police have taken possession of the deceased wolf and will send it to the Finnish Food Authority for examination. The standard procedure includes an investigation of the animal’s age, weight, as well as checking for any diseases or prior injuries.

The Eastern Finland police are highlighting that the ongoing hunting season and the impending rutting period for large game animals increase the risk of wildlife-related accidents. They advise the public to exercise extra caution during twilight and nighttime hours.
