The Minister of Health has emphasized the need to explore the use of weight management medications for children struggling with obesity. A recent expert report has been submitted, following three years of research, detailing strategies to support this vulnerable group.

He highlighted a notable case where a 16-year-old, Sveinn Rúnar Sveinsson, faced severe health risks due to obesity, weighing 140 kilograms at the time. Diagnosed with a metabolic disorder that affected his diet, he has since benefited from diabetes medications that also aid in weight management. He has resumed athletic activities and is among the first children in Iceland to use such weight management medications.

The Health Minister stated that this case illustrates the importance of considering various approaches to combat obesity, a significant health concern affecting both children and adults. He pointed out that Iceland has more lenient criteria for these medications compared to other Nordic countries. However, he acknowledged the limitations in drug production and the need for accurate prescriptions, as diabetic patients and other groups also require this medication.

To advance this initiative, the ministry plans to appoint a project manager and hold a workshop to outline comprehensive strategies addressing lifestyle, diet, sleep, and other factors related to obesity. Additionally, they will consider the needs of those requiring further interventions for obesity-related health issues.
