Plans are underway to construct a new health clinic near the hospital in Akureyri, Iceland. Despite an unsuccessful tender attempt last year, positive discussions about the project are currently progressing, according to the director of the North Iceland Health Institution (HSN).

The proposed health clinic would replace an existing facility located on the northern side of the city. The HSN director expresses confidence that the new building could go out for tender around the New Year if all necessary permits are obtained. This optimism follows a challenging period for healthcare facilities in Akureyri, where it was previously determined that two clinics need to be operational in the area due to population density and urban spread. Earlier this year, the health service relocated from a dilapidated building in the city center to a new site within the Sunnuhlíð shopping center. However, officials have highlighted that a single clinic will not suffice to meet demand.

In addition to the new clinic, the health service received permission to expand its operations further within the Sunnuhlíð center, adding an additional 250 square meters, which will be utilized in the coming months. The focus of the new clinic’s construction is now shifted closer to the main hospital rather than the previously considered campsite area along Þórunnarstræti.

This development reflects ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services for the community and to better accommodate the varying healthcare needs of Akureyri’s residents.
