The eastern border barrier is set to be higher than previously planned. The fence will now stand at 3.5 meters, which is an increase of half a meter, and it will also feature denser mesh. The Finnish Border Guard announced these changes based on experiences from the earlier constructed pilot fence.

Construction of a total of 200 kilometers of solid barrier along the eastern border is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Initially, approximately 70 kilometers will be built at international border crossing points and their surroundings in Southeast Finland, North Karelia, Kainuu, and North Salla. Work is currently underway in the Nuijamaa–Vainikkala area near Lappeenranta, where a 17-kilometer fence is being erected.

The project aims to enhance border security and control in the region, with a significant portion of the fencing planned for Southeast Finland. Recent video footage showcases the ongoing construction efforts and the design of the border infrastructure.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
