Norway faces toilet training challenges among first graders as educators adapt to diverse needs

The issue of toilet training among first graders has become a notable challenge for educators in Norway. Some children starting school have yet to learn to use the toilet independently, prompting teachers to manage this additional responsibility. While teachers, parents, and kindergartens share the task of toilet training, the struggle is apparent, with many teachers indicating that this challenge affects a significant number of students.

One teacher shared anonymously that in previous classes, incidents of children needing assistance with toilet use were frequent. Drammen’s school health services confirmed that the readiness for using the toilet varies significantly among children. Some make great strides ahead of school, while others still depend on diapers.

To assist students who are not yet ready, some schools have implemented a “toilet buddy” system where children pair up to support each other during bathroom visits. Despite many children successfully mastering toilet use before entering primary school, a British study revealed that one in four children this year still relied on diapers upon starting school.

Experts suggest that the pressure to train children to use the toilet should be avoided, as it may prolong the learning process and create resistance. Encouragement and open communication with health services are recommended.

Overall, the push for independence in toilet use emphasizes not just skill acquisition but also social development as children transition into the school environment.
