Faroe Islands

A new fishing vessel, the Kambur, arrived in the Faroe Islands yesterday morning. The company M&S Strendur from Strondum has purchased the freeze-trawler from Norway. Mortan Mortensen serves as the captain and is one of the owners, according to the Faroese Seamen’s Mission.

The new Kambur was formerly known as Veststeinen. Built in 1998, most of the onboard equipment is significantly newer. The vessel measures 47 meters in length and 10 meters in width, with a carrying capacity of 360 tons.

The previous Kambur sank on February 6 of this year while approximately 17 nautical miles off Akraberg in a southeast direction. At the time, there were 16 crew members aboard; 14 were rescued, while two remain missing.

The Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the Kambur.
