Public Health Agency of Sweden to present new guidelines for digital media use among children and adolescents

Monday 2nd 2024 on 09:23 in
Sweden

Research indicates that high usage of digital media among children and adolescents can lead to issues such as sleep difficulties, symptoms of depression, and dissatisfaction with body image. Nonetheless, digital media plays an integral role in the leisure activities of young people today, serving as a means to learn new things and maintain connections with friends.

In a report released by the Public Health Agency of Sweden in June, it was emphasized that there is a need for interventions to mitigate the negative impacts of digital media use on young people. Karin Tegmark Wisell, the agency’s former director-general, noted that promoting a balance among digital media use, physical activity, sleep, and other health-promoting activities could have a positive effect on the population level.

In May, the government tasked the agency with investigating the consequences of digital media use for individuals aged 0-18 and proposing potential measures to address the findings. Previously, there were no concrete recommendations for parents regarding screen time management.

On Monday, the Public Health Agency is set to present guidelines for digital media use for children and adolescents to Social Minister Jakob Forssmed. The press conference will begin at 09:30 local time, and a live broadcast will be available for those interested in following the discussion.
