Philip Jonson, 38, is using his passion for cycling to tackle mental health issues among men. He has embarked on a campaign called “snakk om det mann” (Talk About It, Man), during which he has cycled 22 laps around his hometown of Engeløya in Steigen to raise money for mental health initiatives targeting men.

Jonson has experienced periods of deep reflection and mental struggles throughout his life, particularly since high school. Though he has often managed these challenges on his own, he realized the need for support and openness after almost succumbing to despair on two occasions. He believes that discussions and physical activity, such as cycling, can be effective tools in overcoming mental health challenges.

Statistics show a worrying increase in suicides and drug-related deaths in Norway, especially among men under 40. In Steigen, the suicide rate is 15.3 per 100,000 people, higher than the national average of 12.1. Jonson highlights that two of his friends have succumbed to suicide, prompting him to take action. The local organization Mental Helse emphasizes the importance of having figures like Jonson who are willing to speak openly about mental health issues.

This year, Jonson managed to raise just under 100,000 NOK (approximately $9,600) for Mental Helse through his cycling campaign. While he acknowledges that cycling alone is not a solution, he advocates for creating safe spaces for men to share their emotions, suggesting that physical activity can facilitate these important conversations.

Community leaders stress the need for more champions like Jonson to foster discussion about mental health and encourage men to seek help when needed.
