Lovisa Petersen Glerfoss, the director of the Road Safety Council, has stated that there is no advantage to lowering the driving age to 17 years. This comes in response to a question posed by Lawmaker Elsebeth Mercedis Gunnleygsdóttir to Minister of Transport Dennis Holm regarding the possibility of reducing the age limit, similar to Denmark’s regulations.

Petersen Glerfoss emphasized the significant difference between being 17 and 18 years old, urging caution in considering any changes to the age limit.

In Denmark, the law was modified in 2017 to allow individuals to obtain a driving license at the age of 17. However, this is conditional; until they turn 18, the new drivers must be accompanied by a licensed adult. This accompanying individual must be at least 30 years old, have held their driving license for a minimum of 10 years, and must not have had their license revoked during that time.

Currently, these requirements are being considered for removal by Danish authorities.
