Weather warnings lifted in Iceland as rain and winds decrease

Sunday 1st 2024 on 11:23 in
Iceland

Yellow weather warnings have been lifted in Iceland, with no new landslide alerts reported. The warnings, initially issued for strong winds and heavy rainfall, were set to expire late in the afternoon. Most of the warnings across the country, particularly in regions such as South Iceland, Faxaflói, Breiðafjörður, Southeast Iceland, and the central highlands, are concluding before noon. However, alerts for strong winds in Breiðafjörður, Northeast Iceland, and the eastern region of Glettingur will remain valid until 4 PM today.

Additionally, there are still warnings in effect for landslide risks in the southern Westfjords and Snæfellsnes Peninsula. According to the landslide monitoring team, no reports of landslides have been received.

Today’s temperatures are expected to range from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius, with the warmest weather in the northeast. A large low-pressure system over the Greenland Sea is directing warm and moist air towards Iceland, resulting in continued southerly winds with rain, which should decrease by midday. Northeast Iceland is likely to experience clearer and drier conditions, although wind speeds may increase.

Air pollution levels are reported to be lower today. Current conditions show no significant pollution across the country, aided by the strong winds and rain that are dispersing pollutants. A natural disaster expert noted that winds could carry pollution towards the northwest, but overall, the current pollution levels are improved compared to previous days.
