The chairman of the Independence Party announced that the party would unite and tackle the challenges it faces, similar to how sports teams respond to adverse conditions. He emphasized that the Independence Party is now in a proactive stance.

During a well-attended party council meeting at the Nordica hotel, Chairman Bjarni Benediktsson addressed approximately 350 members, expressing the need to clearly communicate the party’s values and objectives. He criticized leaders from the Left-Green Movement and the Center Party, both of whom have seen recent gains in polls, claiming that leftist administrations have been in power too often since the founding of the republic.

Bjarni highlighted the party’s efforts regarding immigration policies, pointing out the shortcomings of the Left-Green Movement concerning significant legislative matters. He remarked that the party’s leader was distracted, referencing her attendance at a Taylor Swift concert overseas.

Despite the gravity of immigration issues, Bjarni was firm that Iceland would not become a promised land for asylum seekers, asserting that this was out of the question. He declared that the country thrives best under the stewardship of the Independence Party and is committed to forging ahead to improve the party’s standing in public opinion polling, akin to a sports team overcoming setbacks.

He acknowledged that teamwork is crucial for success, drawing on his experience in handball and football. In closing, he suggested that leadership changes could be a part of the solution if the party doesn’t achieve its goals.
