As autumn winds sweep away the last remnants of August, many are beginning to pack away their gas grills for the season. However, there are essential safety considerations to keep in mind regarding gas cylinders.

Fire inspector Ove Frydenberg from Drammen advises that while it’s important to respect the energy stored in gas cylinders, there is no need to fear them. He highlights the potential risks of gas leaks that can occur under certain circumstances, referencing a recent explosive incident in Langesund.

With favorable weather predicted across many regions for the weekend, it’s crucial to remember where gas cylinders should be stored during the winter months. Fire officials recommend keeping cylinders outdoors in well-ventilated areas, such as on a terrace, and not in enclosed spaces like basements or attics. Gas cylinders are designed to endure outdoor conditions, featuring pressure regulation mechanisms to safely release excess pressure in case of temperatures rising.

Frydenberg also emphasizes the importance of checking gas equipment before storing it for winter. Gas hoses should be replaced every three years, or more frequently if exposed to sunlight. Moreover, while it is sufficient to replace just the hose, the regulator should be changed every five years.

In a recent incident in Langesund, an explosion severely damaged a residential area, injuring two individuals. Gas, like propane and butane, poses significant fire hazards, and authorities are investigating to determine the cause.

To detect gas leaks, officials recommend using soapy water, advising that gas has a distinct rotten odor added for safety. Frydenberg suggests investing in a gas alarm for indoor safety, which is an affordable precaution ranging from 500 to 1,000 kroner.
