Jouko Salonen recalls the vibrant atmosphere at Bar Monttu, a cherished local establishment in Jämsänkoski, Finland, where he has been a regular since the 1970s. Salonen first ventured into the bar at just 16. Over the decades, Monttu has become known for its lively gatherings, but its doors have now closed permanently, leaving Salonen and many others nostalgic.

Monttu has been a staple in the community for approximately 60 years, but the profitability of traditional village bars has declined sharply. Katja Kunnari, co-owner of Bar Monttu, revealed that up to 30% of their clientele vanished this year, prompting the decision to close at the end of August, as business became untenable.

Kunnari noted the unusual summer, where the absence of customers was felt greatly, linked to ongoing changes in social habits since the pandemic. Many patrons have remained home, opting for drinking from the comfort of their own spaces, as evidenced by the stark statistic that only 10% of all alcohol consumed in Finland is purchased at restaurants.

The hospitality sector has faced persistent challenges, with fewer customers visiting bars and restaurants since 2000. The rising costs of electricity and food have led people to cut back on outings, instead enjoying beverages at home at lower costs.

As Salonen reflects on the impact of Monttu’s closure on the community, he expresses concern over the increased loneliness among residents, as the bar served as a social hub for events like bingo nights and quizzes. Pia Ahlholm, Kunnari’s business partner, empathizes with customers, stressing that Monttu was much more than a bar; it was a family to many. The future of local entertainment in Jämsänkoski now hangs in the balance.
