The recent warm weather in Norway has led to a significant increase in fly populations, particularly in houses where conditions are ideal for breeding. Trond-Arnt Trondsen, a pest control technician in Bodø, reports that many residents have been seeking solutions for their fly infestations, often discovering swarms upon returning home from vacation. Common culprits include overripe fruit and food waste left out, which can attract hundreds of flies, as they can lay numerous eggs.

Mari Steinert, the pest control director at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, notes that the rise in fly complaints indicates a broader issue across many households this year. The warm summer has created a favorable environment for various fly species, specifically fruit flies, which can reproduce rapidly under the right conditions.

To combat the flies, Trondsen advises cleaning thoroughly and setting traps using a simple mixture of vinegar, water, and dish soap. This non-toxic solution attracts flies, allowing them to drown. For severe infestations, he suggests placing multiple traps near the source of the infestation.

Preventive measures are also key. Steinert emphasizes the importance of proper food storage, keeping fruit in cool conditions, and ensuring food waste is securely covered. While many insects may inadvertently enter homes, maintaining cleanliness and managing moisture can help keep them at bay. In particular, addressing potential sources of food for pests is crucial in mitigating fly populations.
