Bjarni Benediktsson, the Prime Minister of Iceland, has announced that he will consider his position as the leader of the Independence Party ahead of the upcoming national congress. Despite this introspection, he affirmed his commitment to lead the government until the end of its term.

During a recent speech at the party’s parliamentary group meeting, Bjarni emphasized that he plans to make a decision regarding his future in consultation with his colleagues, basing his choice on what he believes is best for the party. He pledged to inform party members of his decision well in advance of the national congress.

Bjarni stated that the current standing of the party in opinion polls is unsatisfactory and demands action. However, he clarified that while the party will not let polling influence its operations, it cannot ignore public sentiment. He encourages a united front within the party, akin to a sports team rallying together in challenging times.

In related remarks, Bjarni acknowledged the need for change while expressing a commitment to tackle the pressing issues currently faced by the government. He aims to navigate these challenges and finish the tasks entrusted to him without the backdrop of dissatisfaction within the party.
