Unique holiday experience offered at Obitsøminde resort in Jutland, Denmark

There are many ways to spend a holiday, but staying overnight in a manure wagon, a bus, or a grain silo is certainly more unusual than most options. At Obitsøminde, a holiday resort located on the Jutland heath, the farm vacation is taken quite literally.

Since the couple moved away from intensive potato and vegetable farming in 2021, Ellen Obitsø and her husband Kurt decided to create a more unique experience. They planted a smaller fruit orchard and various trees, where they have developed alternative accommodations. Ellen often sees guests burst into laughter upon their arrival at these eccentric lodging options.

The idea for their outlandish accommodations was sparked when Kurt discovered an empty manure wagon. He envisioned placing a mattress inside the tank. “I usually tell guests that it will be a ‘manure holiday’ when they stay in there,” Ellen quips.

The resort now features a circus wagon complete with a private hot tub, towering shelters, grain silos that can rotate 360 degrees, and a bus equipped with a jacuzzi. Ellen affectionately refers to the bus as ‘Æ’rutebil,’ explaining that only the heating remains functional inside.

Obitsøminde opened during the coronavirus pandemic, offering ample space when hotels were closed. Initially, about 100 guests booked stays, and this year, the resort expects around 500 visitors.

Guests, ranging from families with children to retirees, come seeking peace and solitude. Ellen states, “I usually say that absolutely nothing happens here. And that’s exactly what they come for.” Originally a small 19th-century family farm, Obitsøminde has transformed into a haven for those looking for a humorous and tranquil escape.
