Air pollution concerns rise in Reykjanesbær due to volcanic activity

Earthquakes on the Reykjanes Peninsula

Air pollution from volcanic activity is expected to fluctuate today as variable winds carry emissions over the town of Reykjanesbær. The current pollution levels are especially concerning in Njarðvík, where the air quality is deemed unhealthy, and in Garður, where it poses a risk to sensitive individuals. Meteorologist Böðvar Sveinsson noted that while the southeast winds are currently pushing polluted air across Reykjanesbær, a shift to southerly winds tomorrow will redirect the pollution over Vogar.

Despite heavy rain and strong winds in the area, there is a noticeable sulfur smell in Keflavík. A local journalist described experiencing irritation in the throat and a pungent odor reminiscent of volcanoes. Meanwhile, Vogum has seen the highest levels of air pollution recently, prompting warnings for residents to keep windows closed. One resident reported suffering from symptoms such as dizziness and nausea due to the severe air quality yesterday.

The volcanic emissions have mixed with smoke from wildfires near the eruption site, intensifying the situation, though the ongoing rain may help mitigate the fires. Böðvar encourages the public to monitor air quality updates actively.
