Residents of Kouvola have revitalized a neglected swimming beach, transforming it into a highly popular destination. The project at Korjärvi earned recognition when it was voted Kymenlaakso’s best local initiative in a competition organized by the Finnish Local Heritage Federation, allowing votes from each province in mainland Finland.

Almost a decade ago, the local community association in the rural village of Mämmälä took over the management of Korjärvi beach after the city of Kouvola ceased its maintenance. The task was substantial, as the city had removed all structures, including a dock and power lines, necessitating a complete rebuild. Initially funded by the EU, most of the work has relied on donations from local businesses and community organizations.

Once overgrown and unusable, the team cleared the area and constructed a dock, changing rooms, and a children’s pool. Unfortunately, the changing rooms had to be rebuilt after falling victim to arson. Additional facilities include a lean-to and a barrel sauna, which is promised to be heated upon request.

The beach attracts morning swimmers, including local residents like Tiina Punkanen and Emilia Nieminen, who appreciate the peaceful ambiance and refreshing water. Tiia Haimi, who commutes from farther away, swims there before work to invigorate herself.

During peak summer days, the beach sees dozens of visitors from various parts of Finland and abroad, with travelers from Germany, France, Italy, and even the United States finding their way there via a biking route that passes through Kouvola.

Dedicated community members like Simo Viitalo and Timo Lomperi ensure the beach remains well-maintained, with Viitalo often tending to the sauna and keeping the area clean. The Korjärvi beach remains a year-round destination, accommodating winter activities as well.
