The recent renovation of Töölönlahden Park in Helsinki has received an unprecedented amount of praise from residents. Jere Saarikko, the project manager and landscape architect, noted that positive feedback is rare, making the response to the park a delightful exception. “It’s truly moving. I walked through the park upon returning from vacation, and I must admit, I shed a happy tear seeing people enjoying the space,” he said.

Originally opened in 2016, the park, situated next to the Kansalaistori square and the Finlandia Hall, was largely criticized for its plain green lawn, primarily attracting geese. The city of Helsinki began the criticized renovation last December, completing the work in July.

Now, the park features timber structures, lounge swings, water fountains, wooden benches, grills, sun loungers, and fitness equipment. Basketball and beach volleyball courts flank the area, which also includes a performance stage available for public booking. Additionally, 16,000 summer flower plants have been introduced, attracting butterflies and other pollinators.

Improvements to the park’s lighting are planned for the fall, potentially creating a massive heart shape when viewed from above by drone. The renovation cost €1.7 million, using pre-existing groundwork from 2016, and it is noted as a temporary solution. Future plans include better integration with the nearby Makasiinipuisto park and its surroundings.

Local residents have expressed their satisfaction with the park’s new diversity, with suggestions for more cafes and services. Saarikko confirmed that spaces for a café and food trucks have been allocated, anticipating a vibrant atmosphere post-renovation of the nearby Finlandia Hall next year.
