Weather warnings issued across West Iceland due to heavy rainfall

Friday 30th 2024 on 22:13 in
Iceland

Weather warnings have been issued across West Iceland today due to heavy rainfall. Tomorrow, additional rainfall warnings will take effect in the South East and Central Highlands. In contrast, the northeast will experience significantly better weather, with temperatures expected to reach 20 degrees Celsius or higher in some areas due to a southerly wind.

Today, the western region experienced substantial rainfall, particularly in Grundarfjörður, where precipitation exceeded 100 millimeters. A weather front will linger over the country during the weekend, contributing to more rain, thus resulting in a high accumulation of rainfall by the end of the weekend. Rainfall will taper off slightly overnight in the western regions but will continue nonetheless.

Warnings for precipitation have already been in effect in Western Iceland, indicating potential for rockslides and landslides, alongside significant pressure on drainage systems. Tomorrow, rainfall warnings will extend to the South East and Central Highlands.

The weather is predicted to improve markedly in Northeastern Iceland tomorrow. Hrafn Guðmundsson will provide further details on weather forecasts during tonight’s news bulletin.

Overall, the weekend is shaping up to be challenging for the western regions, with ongoing risks associated with heavy rainfall and related incidents.
