Seabird hunting season begins amid concerns over sustainability in Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands

The seabird hunting season has begun, and many are eager to go after seafarers. However, the challenge lies in the fact that we know too little about the Faroese seabird population.

As a result, it is difficult to determine whether the seabird hunting is ecologically sustainable, explains biologist Jóhannis Danielsen.

Minister of Environment Ingilín Strøm acknowledges that the knowledge about the seabird population is insufficient and that hunting pressure has increased. The challenge stems from the fact that the region falls under several main councils, but action needs to be taken, the minister promises.
