Weather warnings issued for significant rainfall in Iceland

Iceland

Weather warnings are in place due to significant rainfall expected across parts of Iceland. Today, a wind in the south is forecasted to be cold or moderately strong with light rain or drizzle. Yellow alerts are active in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Breiðafjörður, and the Westfjords, lasting until tomorrow evening due to considerable rainfall. Residents in these areas should prepare for increased runoff and rising water levels in rivers and streams, which may heighten the risk of flooding and landslides, potentially causing damage and disruptions. The public is advised to remain vigilant and pay attention to drainage systems to prevent water-related damage.

In contrast, the eastern part of the country will escape the rain, experiencing lighter winds and temperatures that could reach up to 20 degrees Celsius at their highest.

Weather forecasts for the coming days indicate continued strong southerly winds. Wet weather is expected to persist in the west, with significant increases in rainfall anticipated for the southern regions of the country. Meanwhile, drier periods are expected in the northeast, where temperatures might also reach around 20 degrees in the daytime.

The country is projected to receive warm and humid air from the south, influenced by a low-pressure system over the Greenland Sea and a high-pressure area over the British Isles.
