José Daniel, a 26-year-old Venezuelan, has finally received humanitarian residency in Iceland after nearly two years of waiting. Living in JL-húsid and Ásbrú during his wait, he supported himself by collecting cans for money. Now granted permission to reside in Iceland for one year, he can apply for a renewal.

Expressing his gratitude, José said, “I am so thankful. I feel I deserve this… I thank God for this, and also the Icelandic authorities. They treated me well. I never slept on the street, nor was I ever hungry. I am content.”

José had been awaiting a response to his application for international protection, and during this time, he lived in state-sponsored accommodation with access to food and financial support. Despite others losing hope, he maintained faith in his chances of receiving a permit.

Previously residing in JL-húsid in Reykjavík, José and fellow Venezuelans gained attention for their can-collecting efforts in the city. They sold the cans and bottles for daily earnings between 5,000 and 10,000 krónur. While awaiting their asylum decisions, they were unable to take up conventional work without special permission.

Now optimistic about his future, José has secured a job at a Mexican restaurant, is renting an apartment, and hopes to bring his daughter, currently living with her grandmother in Venezuela, to Iceland. Meanwhile, his partner has also fled Venezuela, residing in the United States like many fellow Venezuelans.

José strongly criticizes the Venezuelan government, claiming it has committed electoral fraud to maintain power, adding that life conditions in Venezuela have not improved, contrary to government assertions.
