Twelve years have passed since Mathias Esmann lost his close friend, Jonas Thomsen Sekyere. On a November evening in 2012, 21-year-old Jonas was fatally stabbed in the chest at the Bakken nightclub in Copenhagen’s Kødbyen district. This morning, the Copenhagen Police announced the extradition of 39-year-old Omer Muse, the suspect in the murder, who appeared in a preliminary hearing today.

Mathias was present in court to witness Muse acknowledge that he killed Jonas. “Today, I think of Jonas with a huge smile,” Mathias said. However, he described the revelation of the suspect’s extradition after 12 years as overwhelming. “At first, it was a huge blow. It was an emotional rollercoaster,” he shared.

Mathias and Jonas had been friends for several years before the tragic event, living together at a college in central Copenhagen. Mathias remembered Jonas as a wonderful person with infectious energy and academic inclinations. He was not out that night when Jonas was fatally wounded, and despite attempts to save him, Jonas was pronounced dead about an hour after arrival at Rigshospitalet.

Following the news of Jonas’s death, Mathias struggled with grief. “Sometimes, I was grateful to have known Jonas; other times, I was extraordinarily sad and couldn’t bear it,” he reflected.

During the hearing, Muse admitted to stabbing Jonas but claimed he had little memory of the events due to intoxication. After the incident, he fled to Somaliland, where he lived freely for a few years before being arrested. He later escaped to Ethiopia but was captured this summer under an international arrest warrant and extradited to Denmark.

Mathias explained that over the years, it was Jonas’s memory, not the perpetrator, that dominated his thoughts. “It’s become easier to bear, but right now, I just remember Jonas.” Omer Muse is currently remanded in custody for 27 days.
