Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil, the former Danish Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, has announced her candidacy for the position of Mayor of Copenhagen following a recent cabinet reshuffle. Recognized for her strong debating skills and her ability to connect with people, she has garnered both support and attention from political allies and opponents alike.

Per Clausen, a member of the European Parliament from the Red-Green Alliance, recalls first meeting Rosenkrantz-Theil when she was elected to the Folketing (Danish Parliament) in 1999. He describes her as an unparalleled debater, particularly noting her performance during a challenging exchange with a seasoned politician. Despite being introduced to complex tax issues for the first time, she emerged victorious in that debate.

Described as “temperamental,” Clausen acknowledges her determination and persistence, which sometimes led to friction with others. However, he believes her tenacity was a necessary trait to navigate a male-dominated political environment and contributed to her prominence within the Red-Green Alliance in the early 2000s.

Jens Rohde, a former member of the Parliament from the Liberal Party, shared how their friendship began amid a controversial protest in 2003. Cai being ostracized by some, he reached out to Rosenkrantz-Theil, leading to a lasting friendship. Rohde praises her as delightful company and acknowledges her negotiation skills, stating she excels at understanding her opponents’ perspectives.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recognized Rosenkrantz-Theil’s contributions as a capable minister during the introduction of her new cabinet. The upcoming municipal elections in November 2025 will determine if she will wear the mayoral chain, a challenge made more complex by the Social Democrats’ recent losses in other Danish cities.

Rosenkrantz-Theil remains optimistic, emphasizing her commitment to addressing urban issues comprehensively from her future role in the capital.
