After being closed for three months, the Rautatientori metro station in Helsinki will reopen on Monday, September 2nd. The closure has complicated transportation in the city center throughout the summer. Johanna Wallin, the head of HSL’s traffic department, expressed gratitude to passengers for their patience.

With the station’s reopening, metro services will run as frequently as every three minutes. The renovations have progressed on schedule, though some unexpected challenges were encountered. The estimated cost of the repairs currently stands at €14.1 million, but it may rise to €16 million due to excavation work in the underground areas where water leaks were discovered.

The three-month renovation has not only enhanced fire safety but also improved passenger comfort, including upgraded lighting on walls. A notable visible change for travelers is the installation of smoke-blocking doors at the bottom of the escalators, which will help separate the metro tunnels from the platform in case of smoke removal is necessary.

Additionally, the Mellunmäki station, which has also been closed, is set to reopen on Monday, September 9th. This will mark the end of any exceptional metro service disruptions for the year.
