Siglufjörður road reopened amid landslide risks in northern Iceland

The Siglufjörður road has been reopened, despite ongoing landslide risks in northern Iceland. Weather forecasts predict precipitation in the northern regions today, although not as severe as last weekend. However, due to current conditions, this rain could have a more significant impact than usual, as the soil has not fully recovered from the waterlogged weather of the previous weekend.

The Icelandic Met Office has issued warnings that the ground remains unstable, increasing the risk of landslides when rain falls on already saturated soil. Efforts to clear debris from roadways are ongoing, with road maintenance staff working throughout the day.

Geologist Þorsteinn Sæmundsson from the University of Iceland stated that the road shifts approximately one meter annually towards the sea. The road’s closure was necessary in recent days due to landslide dangers, which also coincides with persistent land subsidence in the area. The situation remains delicate, and further monitoring is required to ensure safety for travelers in northern Iceland.
