Witnessing a fatal accident can have significant physical and psychological effects, especially for those who may be in danger themselves. This was highlighted over the weekend when an ice wall collapsed at Breiðamerkurjökull, resulting in one man’s death and injuries to a woman.

In response, the Red Cross established an emergency center to assist the tourists present during the incident, as well as the tour guides and first responders on-site. A psychologist from the Red Cross’s crisis team emphasized the importance of reaching out to international tourists and providing them with guidance before they leave the country.

Elfa Dögg S. Leifsdóttir, team leader and psychologist, noted that the experience can be overwhelmingly distressing for those who were present. She described the varied emotional reactions from people, stating that some appeared numb, while others experienced confusion and anxiety. The situation can lead to profound mental and physical responses.

The crisis team aims to guide individuals on their next steps, often finding that the shock of such experiences does not fully set in until later. Many tourists have a strong desire to return home immediately after such traumatic events, which is why it is crucial for the team to meet with them promptly and discuss what they might expect going forward. The Red Cross encourages those affected to seek further assistance once they have returned to their home countries, emphasizing that healing is a process that may require ongoing support.
