Six people manned the open Faroese fishing vessel Naddodd, which set sail from Tvøroyri towards Norway on Saturday. The journey had been progressing well until today when the Naddodd encountered trouble and issued a distress call. The Norwegian Coast Guard was already on site with a helicopter in the afternoon; however, according to the duty officer at the MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Center), the crew had indicated that everything was fine on board.

However, around 6 PM, the MRCC received word from the Norwegian authorities that the Naddodd had capsized. Five crew members were in a lifeboat, but the sixth was reported missing.

By 8 PM, the MRCC was informed that the Norwegian Coast Guard had located all six individuals, but the sixth person was found deceased beneath the vessel.

The rescue operation has been hindered by severe weather. MRCC duty officer Jóhan Müller reported that by 8:30 PM, three of the rescued crew members were en route to Florø by helicopter. They were physically unharmed but psychologically affected by the incident, while two others were also being transported by another helicopter.

Efforts were made to recover the drowned individual underneath the Naddodd, but conditions were very challenging, with winds reaching 25 meters per second and waves measuring four to five meters high, compounded by darkness.

A video shared by the rescue organization “Redningsselskapet” via social media illustrates the difficult weather conditions. Multiple ships, rescue boats, and two helicopters are involved in the operation, with Müller confirming that the rescue efforts will continue until the sixth individual is retrieved. The contact person for Naddodd has been notified.
