Siglufjörður road reopens amid ongoing landslide threats in northern Iceland

The Siglufjörður road has been reopened after being closed for several days due to the risk of landslides, but there remains a continuous threat of ground movement in the region. Weather forecasts predict precipitation in northern Iceland today, although not as severe as the previous weekend’s heavy rainfall. However, due to current conditions, this rain could have a significant impact.

The Meteorological Office has issued a warning that the soil has not yet stabilized following last weekend’s deluge, which poses a continued risk of landslides in northern Iceland when rain falls on already saturated ground. Crews from the Road and Coastal Administration are actively engaged in clearing debris from the roadway throughout the day.

Geologist Thorsteinn Sæmundsson from the University of Iceland indicated that the road shifts about one meter each year toward the sea, contributing to the ongoing concerns regarding ground stability in the area.
