Greenland now has hopes that the Arctic ambassador position will be established among Greenlandic people and within the community.

Mute B. Egede, the Premier of Greenland, interprets the statement made by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during a press conference following yesterday’s state meeting, indicating that the next ambassador will be from Greenland. Since 2012, there have been five Arctic ambassadors, all of whom were Danish.

Mette Frederiksen stated that Denmark will respond positively to Greenland’s wishes.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has previously rejected Greenland’s requests for a local appointment. He clarified that the Arctic ambassador role falls under the Danish Foreign Service, and nationality is not a critical factor in determining who holds the position.

The ambassador coordinates foreign policy among Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, as well as the realm’s relations with the United States and Canada.

Discussions regarding the Arctic ambassador position began about a year ago when the previous ambassador to South Africa, Tobias Elling Rehfel, was appointed Arctic ambassador. He was originally scheduled to start on September 1 last year but has yet to assume the role.
