Volcanic eruption at Sundhnúkur crater causes haze across Iceland

A volcanic eruption has occurred at the Sundhnúkur crater, with volcanic haze likely moving out to sea today. Over the past 24 hours, haze from the eruption has been visible in various locations across the country, although measurable levels have been relatively low, posing no health risks, according to a natural disaster expert.

Yesterday, the volcanic haze was particularly prominent in the southwestern region, but visibility has diminished this morning. Reports indicated that the haze was also observed in the Mývatn area last night. The expert noted that it was apparent across much of the country yesterday and is expected to remain visible today. However, the haze will likely be carried out to sea, making it less conspicuous than the previous day.

Meteorological forecasts suggest that volcanic pollution may drift out to sea today. The Icelandic Meteorological Office indicates that volcanic haze is expected over Grindavík, with the possibility of it extending over the southern part of the country later this evening. However, the expert believes that the haze will significantly dissipate beforehand, and people are unlikely to notice it much. It is recommended to monitor the air quality data available on environmental agency websites.

Volcanic activity at the Sundhnúkur crater has remained consistent overnight, similar to previous days. The expert mentioned that while the eruption continues with some intensity, the movement of the lava edge has been minimal.
