Six crew members on Faroese boat Nadodd rescued after capsizing near Tvøroyri en route to Norway

Tuesday 27th 2024 on 22:24 in
Faroe Islands

Six people were on board the Faroese boat Nadodd when it departed from Tvøroyri towards Norway on Saturday.

The journey had been smooth until the evening, when Nadodd encountered distress at sea. At 6 PM, the Norwegian rescue authorities alerted MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) that Nadodd had capsized. Five of the crew members managed to escape in a lifeboat, but the sixth person went missing.

It was later confirmed that this individual was trapped underneath the boat. By 8 PM, MRCC received confirmation that the Norwegian coastguard had located all six individuals, but tragically, the sixth crew member was found drowned beneath the vessel.

Challenging weather conditions affected the rescue efforts. MRCC’s duty officer, Jóhan Müller, reported that by 8:30 PM, three of the rescued individuals were being airlifted to Florø. Although they were physically unharmed, they were profoundly affected mentally by the ordeal. Two other crew members were also on their way to safety via another helicopter.

Attempts were made to reach the missing person under the Faroese boat, but the conditions at the scene were extremely difficult. Several ships, rescue boats, and two helicopters participated in the operation.

The contact person for Nadodd has been informed of the situation. Müller provided additional details about the rescue earlier in the evening.
