The recent glacier accident has raised concerns about how it impacts tourists’ perceptions of Iceland, according to Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, the Minister of Tourism. She warned that incidents like the tragic event this past weekend could adversely affect how visitors view the country, with reports indicating that some individuals have already canceled their glacier tours.

During a government meeting, a working group composed of officials from four ministries was established to review safety regulations related to glacier tours, particularly in light of the accident that resulted in one fatality and another injury. Alfreðsdóttir emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that ensuring safety is vital for attracting tourists to Iceland.

“This issue also pertains to how we present ourselves to the world when such grave accidents occur, as the coverage impacts the tourism operators who manage these activities effectively,” she noted.

The immediate focus is on investigating the incident, after which the working group will present recommendations as quickly as possible. Alfreðsdóttir highlighted that even now, tourists are beginning to withdraw from planned glacier excursions.

“I want to reiterate that thousands of tourism businesses welcome visitors every single day and do so exceptionally well. Accidents can happen, and they underline the necessity of striving to prevent incidents that could be avoided,” she added.

As Iceland seeks to reassure potential visitors, the need for robust organizational structures and stringent safety measures in tourism is becoming increasingly crucial, particularly regarding glacier activities that pose inherent risks.
