Maintaining oral hygiene is more than just a matter of comfort; it can significantly impact longevity. Good dental care is linked to the prevention of serious health issues such as diabetes, pneumonia, arthritis, dementia, and cardiovascular diseases—conditions that can be life-threatening for elderly individuals. This was highlighted in a research project conducted by the University of Copenhagen, which is currently on the agenda of Brønderslev Municipality.

Viggo Egon Anton Jensen, an 88-year-old resident of the Støberiet care center, experienced extensive tooth loss by the age of 46, resulting in the need for three sets of dentures. He emphasizes the importance of oral cleanliness, brushing his teeth three times daily. Following the center’s initiative to emphasize dental health, Brønderslev’s elderly care committee plans to extend this focus to all municipal care facilities, which will require an additional budget of 507,000 DKK.

The care center has partnered with municipal dental services to provide education on dental hygiene and brushing techniques. Mathilde Hougesen, the assistant manager of the center, highlights that such knowledge has made it easier for staff to assist residents in maintaining their oral health. Regular discussions about dental care take place at weekly meetings, with staff actively reminding residents to maintain their hygiene.

Research leader Esben Øzhayat from the University of Copenhagen reiterates the connection between oral health and overall wellness, especially for older adults who are more susceptible to infections stemming from poor oral hygiene. Initiatives like “Healthy Mouths for Life” signify a broader effort to improve dental care in Denmark’s elderly care sector.

As discussions continue on whether to expand the program to more care centers in Brønderslev, Jensen, appreciative of the staff support, underscores the importance of maintaining clean teeth as one ages.
