Concerns raised over safety measures at high school events in Reykjavík

Concerns have been raised regarding safety measures at high school events following reports of increased knife-carrying among youths and more serious incidents, like an attack during the Cultural Night in Reykjavík. Security protocols at these gatherings will be tightened as students across the country participate in their new semester and various school parties.

Ásta Laufey Aðalsteinsdóttir, assistant principal at Borgarholtsskóli, announced a review of security measures for upcoming winter events. The company responsible for event security, Gó-öryggi, has previously managed security at most school gatherings in the capital area. The owner has expressed the need for discussions to reinforce their operational procedures, aiming for clarity among all staff involved.

According to a representative from Gó-öryggi, the occurrence of knife confiscations at high school events is alarmingly frequent. Around a thousand young people typically attend school events, which often serve as joint celebrations. In preparation, approximately 25 security personnel from the company, alongside staff from the venue and school employees, are deployed for these parties.

Students are routinely informed about security checks upon arrival, and they are encouraged to refrain from bringing prohibited items, including e-cigarettes. Although many existing protocols will likely remain the same, adjustments aim to ensure every staff member knows their responsibilities clearly.

Overall, the focus is on enhancing safety at events, especially in light of rising concerns about youth violence.
