Tourism officials are emphasizing that travelers must trust in the safety of organized tours following a tragic incident at Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. The death of a tourist prompted over a hundred rescue workers to search for missing individuals based on incorrect information regarding the number of people in an ice cave tour. Jón Þór Víglundsson, a spokesperson for the Icelandic Search and Rescue organization Landsbjörg, and Vilhjálmur Árnason, deputy chair of the Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður Board, both stressed the importance of prioritizing safety for tourists.

Vilhjálmur pointed out that local businesses do not offer ice cave tours during the summer, emphasizing the need for reliance on experienced guides. Tourists are particularly eager to connect with natural forces but must have confidence that their safety is assured during these excursions.

Jón Þór noted that while discussions on accident prevention tend to be vocal when incidents occur, they quickly fade away afterward. He referenced a previous fatality this winter in a separate location, illustrating the ongoing risks associated with such tours. The statements highlight the urgent need for clearer communication and regulations regarding the safety of outdoor tourism activities in Iceland, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the country’s breathtaking landscapes without compromising their safety.
