New proposal shortens maritime education for deckhands in Klaksvík, Faroe Islands

Those aspiring to become deckhands will now only need to attend school for six months instead of a year.

A workgroup has recommended that the maritime education be restructured into modules. This new approach will allow students to complete the deckhand portion separately from the engine section.

As a result, students will be able to complete their studies for becoming a deckhand in just six months, as opposed to the current requirement of one year.

The workgroup has submitted its proposal to Djóni Nolsøe Joensen, the Minister of Children and Education, suggesting a review of the maritime education program at Sjónámi in Klaksvík.

The industry has long requested a shorter pathway to becoming a fully qualified deckhand on commercial vessels, as there is a significant demand for more Faroese individuals on board.
