Government increases fuel reduction obligation in Sweden

The government has decided to increase the fuel reduction obligation, as confirmed by Energy and Business Minister Ebba Busch during a press conference on Tuesday. On January 1, the reduction obligation was lowered to 6 percent for both diesel and gasoline, a significant decrease from the previous level of 30.5 percent for diesel, while gasoline was reduced from 7.8 percent. This reduction was one of the key campaign promises made by the Tidö parties.

During the current budget negotiations, the Tidö parties have reached an agreement to raise the fuel reduction obligation once again. A report by SVT explores how this change by the government could impact consumers financially.

This adjustment comes in the context of the government’s ongoing efforts to meet climate goals, which indicate that higher fuel prices may be necessary to achieve environmental targets.
