Budget negotiations are set to begin soon in many municipalities, affecting numerous citizens. Current estimates suggest that around 30% of individuals with substance abuse in their family will develop an addiction themselves, particularly impacting young people who struggle to complete their education and maintain employment.

In Mariagerfjord Municipality, financial pressures have led to the consideration of several cost-cutting proposals, including a potential reduction in support for TUBA, an organization providing counseling and therapy for children and young people from families affected by substance abuse. A proposed cut could result in the loss of 135,000 kroner in funding, jeopardizing services for individuals aged 25 to 35 who have grown up with parents struggling with addiction.

Kåre Skarsholm, national leader of TUBA, voiced deep concerns regarding the proposed cut, emphasizing its far-reaching implications. He believes that failing to support this vulnerable group may lead to higher costs for the municipality in the future, as untreated issues tend to resurface.

Jan Thorbøll Andersen, a member of the Liberal Party and chair of the health and care committee in Mariagerfjord, acknowledged the difficult trade-offs faced in budgeting. He stated that losing TUBA’s services could result in significant long-term costs for the municipality, stressing the importance of a balanced budget while also recognizing the need for preventive measures.

As the municipality prepares to finalize next year’s budget, politicians must decide whether to implement the proposed cuts, which affect even small amounts, highlighting the challenging decisions ahead.
