Faroese Coast Guard intercepts Scottish trawler Venture IV for illegal fishing near Mykines
On a recent evening, the Faroese Coast Guard vessel Brimil intercepted the Scottish trawler Venture IV while it was fishing in a protected area northeast of Mykines. The vessel was reportedly inside a conservation zone known as H, which has been off-limits for trawling for at least 20 years.
Upon the vessel’s interception, the captain was ordered to sail to Tórshavn, where they faced a fine. In addition to the fine, the captain is also required to pay for the value of the fish that were caught, which was minimal as the trawler had only been fishing for less than 24 hours.
The Venture IV departed from Tórshavn early yesterday evening, having provided security for the payment that is due. This incident underscores the ongoing enforcement of fishing regulations in protected areas to safeguard marine ecosystems.
