Over the course of six episodes, the documentary series “Demenskoret” follows 17 Danes living with dementia as they prepare for a major concert at the DR Concert Hall. Host Puk Elgård and choir leader Claus Christensen closely engage with the choir members and their families.

Elgård became involved in the project with the goal of fostering joy and improving the quality of life for people navigating the challenges of dementia. However, she became acutely aware of the realities of the disease during the filming process. Initially, she held a romanticized view of dementia, thinking it primarily affected kind elderly individuals who occasionally became confused. The stark reality hit her hard as she witnessed the intense struggles of those affected.

The filming proved challenging, especially during the choir’s first session. Many participants were reluctant to join, expressing a desire to leave, which caused Elgård to question the feasibility of the project. However, when music began to play, the atmosphere shifted. The choir members found solace in singing, leading to emotional moments for both the singers and their families.

As the series progressed, Elgård witnessed the transformative power of music. Participants often seemed to break through the fog of their condition, connecting to their true selves through song. One poignant moment involved a husband sharing how his wife had expressed a renewed will to live after engaging with the choir.

Elgård hopes “Demenskoret” will encourage viewers to sing together, creating cherished moments amid the difficulties of dementia. She seeks to raise awareness about the realities of living with dementia, inviting open conversations to reduce the stigma surrounding the condition. The first episode is available on DRTV from August 27.
