Two German boys, aged 9 and 12, tragically lost their lives after being buried under sand at Nørre Vorupør on Sunday. According to preliminary investigations, the boys were attempting to dig a tunnel in the dunes when a collapse occurred, burying them beneath the sand. The police received a report of the incident at 15:55, and by the time they arrived, several volunteers had already begun efforts to rescue the children.

Approximately 30 volunteers were involved in digging the boys out, using their hands in a desperate attempt to free them. Despite these efforts, rescuers later tried to resuscitate the boys before airlifting them to a hospital in Skejby, near Aarhus. Their current condition remains unknown, but they were reportedly in critical danger when transported.

The boys were on vacation, each from different German families, although it is unclear if the families knew each other prior to the incident. The boys’ parents accompanied them to the hospital.

In light of the tragedy, local authorities are cautioning residents and visitors to exercise great care in coastal areas, warning of an increased risk of landslides due to heavy rainfall experienced in the region over the past few days. While it’s too early to conclude that weather conditions were a direct cause of the collapse, officials emphasize the inherent dangers of the dunes along the west coast, urging people to treat these areas with respect.

A mobile police station will be set up in the area, and psychological support services are being made available for those affected.
